We’ve put together a list of some of the most common mistakes people make when it comes to bathroom design. As industry professionals, we use such information to help ensure we provide an outstanding overall service – and don’t make such mistakes.
- Improper Bathroom Installation
The bathroom can be a dangerous place to be, with 70% of home accidents taking place there. That’s why it’s vital that your bathroom is installed properly. At York & Young, we have over 50 years experience and understand the importance of proper installation – that’s why we always pay meticulous attention to detail during the installation process.
- Too Many Fixtures & Not Enough Space
Space is a luxury. Don’t try to cram too much into a bathroom. In smaller bathrooms, opt for a shower rather than a bath. If you must have a bath, a corner based shower can be a wise choice. Wall hung units can also save space. To make a small bathroom look and feel bigger, use lighter colours, make sure the room has plenty of lights. Mirrors can also work great to support this.
- Lack of Storage
When there’s not enough storage within the bathroom, things – such as toiletries – are often left around loose, cluttering up the room. Add cabinets and shelves for additional storage space. Towel racks and hanging hooks can be used to keep everything neat and tidy too.
- A Design for Now and Not the Future
It’s important not to go overboard with trends. Think long-term, not short term. Can you live with your design choices in the future? If you plan on moving home within the next few years, will your bathroom appeal to others? It’s important to keep these questions in mind.
- Choosing the Wrong Materials
Water and condensation can cause some materials found in bathrooms to deteriorate quickly. Wood, for example, is a common victim. Opt for materials that can take the humidity and bathroom conditions.Floors and tiles should be impermeable. Choose blinds instead of curtains – metal venetians are highly recommended for bathrooms.
- Insufficient Lighting
As we have mentioned, a bathroom can be a dangerous place to be. That’s why it’s important that they are well lit – so you can see what you are doing. Lighting can also be used to make a smaller bathroom look bigger, and mood lighting is a great option that allows you to bring great ambience to the bathroom.
